What’s in the Cabbage?

Cabbage and the other green leafy vegetables can help kill cancer cells. According to the Cancer Research Conference in Britain, Indole-3 –carbinol(I3C) could be a powerful cancer fighter used in combination with chemotherapy.

I3C in cruciferous vegetables were found to make the tumors of breast cancers surrender to chemotherapy. A study in the Netherlands revealed subjects who consumed the most vegetables lowered their risk by 25 per cent in getting colorectal cancer. Those who specifically consumed cruciferous vegetables dropped their risk of getting colorectal cancer by a significant 49 %.

In Singapore, a study found that regular consumption of cruciferous vegetables like cabbage lowered the potential of lung cancer by 30% in non-smokers. Smokers who ate the same type of veggies dropped their risks by 60%. Other studies have shown that cabbages and similar vegetables can also help fight bladder cancer.

Phytochemicals known as glucosinolates is believed to be responsible for the cancer fighting ability of the cabbage. These chemicals are metabolized by our body into their anti carcinogen form known as isothiocyanates.

Animal and human studies have constantly revealed that diets high in cruciferous vegetables are linked with lower risks for cancer. They have shown the correlation between brassica or cruciferous vegetables and cancers. Cabbage consumption was associated with lower risk cancer particularly on the stomach, colon, and lung.

The benefits of cabbage and consumption of similar cruciferous vegetables are more prominent in the demographics of three groups prone to cancer: men, smokers, and older individuals who are sixty seven years old and above. Eating half a head of cabbage everyday will lower the risk of this group to cancer.

Organically grown cabbages are the best option if you want to make most of the anti-cancer benefits. A comparison to the conventionally grown cabbage revealed that they have a higher level of phytonutrients. Steaming method best retains the nutrients of this anti cancer vegetable.

The study wasn’t focused on broccoli alone, but allowed for eating all the commonly consumed cruciferous vegetables – in either their raw or cooked forms. The study found that among smokers – and especially former smokers – higher intake of cruciferous vegetables was associated with a lower risk of lung cancer. Smokers who ate raw veggies saw the most benefit.Researchers divided their findings into four subtypes of lung cancer. The strongest risk reduction was seen among subjects with squamous or small-cell carcinoma, the two types most strongly associated with heavy smoking.”Broccoli is not a therapeutic drug, but for smokers who believe they cannot quit nor do anything about their risk, this is something positive,” Tang said. “People who quit smoking will definitely benefit more from intake of cruciferous vegetables.”The percentage of Americans who smoke has fallen below 20% for the first time since the mid 1960s. Another study, out in July 2008, suggested a link between men who ate broccoli four times a week and a protective effect against prostate cancer.So the real story here is that we should all try to increase our consumption of cruciferous vegetables whether we smoke or not as part of a cancer prevention diet.

Folic acid, which is found in abundance in spinach, is responsible for cell DNA maintenance.  It promotes a strong immune system.  It helps prevent colorectal and cervical cancers by blocking the mutation of healthy cells into cancerous ones.

Spinach is also protective or combative against bladder cancer.  An article entitled Spinach’s Anti Cancer Propertiesstates that “Research published in 2004 by The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center shows that spinach is protective against bladder cancer. High dietary intake of the alpha-tocopherol form of Vitamin E found in spinach was associated with a 42 percent reduced risk of bladder cancer in their five year study. Another form of Vitamin E also abundant in spinach, gamma-tocopherol, serves to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Fight Cancer with Soy or Soy-based foods

Soy-based foods include soy milk, tempeh, tofu, textured vegetable protein (TVP), miso, soybeans, soy nuts, soy flour, green soybeans (endamame), and other soy beverages.  Soy products are rich in isoflavones, which are chemically similar to estrogen and testosterone.  These isoflavones block the actions of these two hormones, thus preventing or fighting the development of breast and prostate cancers, which are both hormone-sensitive.

Studies conducted in Asia, where most diets are rich in soy products, have discovered that soybeans can eliminate, almost a 100 percent, the threats from breast, cervical and prostate cancers.  Soybeans are rich in phytochemicals like phytic acid, protease inhibitors, and saponins, all know cancer fighters.  Genistein, a phytochemical, inhibits enzymes that promote cancer cell growth.

Fight Cancer with Strawberries

Strawberries are very high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that assists the immune system fight cancer.  Strawberries are a rich source of ellagic acid, a known cancer fighter.  P-coumaric acid and chlorogenic acid, which are found in strawberries, attach to cancer-causing nitric oxide and flush them out of the body, thus reducing the risk of cancer.

Strawberries are also rich in fibers, which help prevent colon, pancreatic, breast, prostatic and rectal cancers.  A word of caution: Strawberries are almost always treated with pesticides, thus choose the organically grown variety.
